Biden tries to draw Georgia voters without the help of a Senate race this time around

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will both hit the campaign trail in Georgia on Saturday. The Democrat narrowly won the battleground state in 2020, and will require a high turnout rate to secure victory once again.

Trump’s campaign rally will be held at The Forum in Rome, Georgia, home to MAGA loyalist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). Biden will head to Pullman Yards, where he’ll hold an evening event in Atlanta, home to a majority of Democratic voters in the state.

While Biden secured Georgia in the last election, a state that hasn’t backed a Democrat in three decades, Trump only fell behind the president by 0.23% of the vote.

Biden began camping alongside Sens. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Raphael Warnock (D-GA), who, at the time, were running as Democratic Senate hopefuls. Two runoff elections put Georgia in the national spotlight, eventually putting the Senate in the hands of Democrats for the first time in a decade when Ossoff and Warnock came out victorious over their Republican counterparts.

Black Georgia voters showed up strongly for Biden and the state’s Democratic senate candidates in 2020, further mobilized by voices such as former Rep. Stacey Abrams (D-GA) and several prominent voting rights organizations.

But this year, the pressure lies solely on Biden to rally voters to the polls, and some Democratic strategists see this as a challenge as the president heads to The Peach State this weekend.

“Without any statewide races, anything of note on the ballot, turnout is going to be a challenge,” Andrew Heaton told CNN, a Democratic strategist who previously worked with Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA).

Biden, joined by first lady Jill Biden, is set to accept endorsements from the AAPI Victory Fund, The Collective PAC, and the Latino Victory Fund at the Atlanta event, the Hill reports. Biden is losing ground among minority voters, recent polls show, pushing his reelection campaign to refine efforts in maintaining a focus on these crucial voter demographics.
