Biden’s approval rating spells trouble ahead of 2024: ‘That’s the lowest in an NBC poll for an incumbent’

President Joe Biden is leaving 2023 with record-setting low approval ratings ahead of his reelection year, a potential cause for concern for the incumbent president.

MSNBC News revealed its last poll of 2023, showing that at the start of the year, Biden had an approval rating of 46% against a disapproval rating of 50% — poll numbers taken only a couple of months after the 2022 midterm elections that provided better than expected results for Democrats. However, the most recent NBC poll showed the president’s approval rating going down to 40%, while his disapproval rating has gone up to 57%.

“That’s the lowest in an NBC poll for an incumbent facing a reelection year,” political correspondent Steve Kornacki said.

Former President Donald Trump, who ran for reelection in 2020, had an approval rating of 44% against a disapproval rating of 54%. Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama, who ran for reelection in 2012, had an approval rating of 46% against a disapproval rating of 48%.

The polling data also found that more people are concerned about Biden’s age and fitness when compared to Trump, even though Trump is only a few years younger than Biden. Of those surveyed, 74% were either majorly or moderately concerned about Biden’s age and fitness, compared to those concerned on a major or moderate level for Trump at 47%.

When comparing Trump and Biden’s legal troubles, however, both were much closer in polling. 62% of respondents said they had either major or moderate concerns about Trump’s civil and criminal trials, while 60% had major or moderate concerns regarding Biden’s foreign business dealings with his son, Hunter Biden.

Trump is leading the Republican Party’s primary race, meaning there is a chance that the United States will see a rematch between him and Biden in the 2024 presidential election. In polling data from the Wall Street Journal, Trump received 47% of the vote against Biden’s 43% in a hypothetical election between just the two of them; when third-party candidates were included, Trump received 37% of the vote against Biden’s 31%, with various third-party candidates, including Robert Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West, taking 17% of the vote.
