Menendez and his co-defendants were arraigned last month after he was indicted on corruption charges on Sept. 21. The charging document featured images of gold bars and stacks of cash found in Menendez’s possession. The New Jersey Democrat was charged with separate corruption allegations in 2015, but the charges were dropped in 2018 after a mistrial.

Menendez has served as a senator from the Garden State since 2006 and will be up for reelection in 2024. He has been called on to resign from the Senate by several Democratic senators, but he has stated that he will not do so.

Several New Jersey Democrats are reportedly considering challenging Menendez in the 2024 Senate election in the state, with Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) announcing a primary challenge days after Menendez was indicted.

Menendez’s trial date is scheduled for two weeks before another high-profile case in federal court. Former President Donald Trump’s trial in the federal case alleging mishandling of classified documents is scheduled for May 20 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
