Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun announces he will step down following plane manufacturing concerns – Washington Examiner

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun, along with two other senior executives, announced they are stepping down from their positions Monday.

Additionally, board Chairman Larry Kellner will not be running for reelection, and Stan Deal, the president and CEO of the company’s commercial airplane unit, will retire after several production failures of the company’s passenger jets, the Associated Press reported

“President and CEO Dave Calhoun today announced his decision to step down as CEO at the end of 2024, and he will continue to lead Boeing through the year to complete the critical work underway to stabilize and position the company for the future,” the company said in a statement.

The announcement comes amid public and regulatory scrutiny over the quality of Boeing’s planes following a series of recent manufacturing problems, including the door plug blowout on an Alaska Airlines jet in January, which was preceded by two fatal airplane crashes in 2018 and 2019.

Calhoun previously defended the company’s planes after the Alaska Airlines incident in early January.

“We fly safe planes,” Calhoun told MSNBC on Capitol Hill in late January after the Alaska Airlines incident. “We don’t put airplanes in the air that we don’t have 100% confidence in.”

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Department of Justice are investigating the door plug blowout incident. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration released an audit this month that found that the company failed 33 product audits.

Just last week, Boeing’s chief financial officer warned investors that the business would be spending more cash than previously expected in the first quarter due to lawsuits and production delays.

Steve Mollenkopf will assume Kellner’s position as independent board chairman and will lead the process for choosing the company’s next CEO, Boeing said.
