Jaiden Rodriguez, the Colorado middle schooler who is known for standing up for displaying a Gadsden flag patch on his backpack, held a story hour for fellow children to encourage them to also have courage.

Rodriguez teamed up with conservative children’s book publisher Brave Books this past weekend to read Kevin Sorbo’s new book The Test of Lionhood at the Castle Rock Library in Colorado.

“I just like to support kids in getting knowledge,” Rodriguez said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “I like this book because it talks about bravery, and I’m just glad they’re here to listen to me, that they’re hearing about how to be brave.”

Rodriguez gained national attention in August when a video of him and his mother confronting an official from the Vanguard School in Colorado Springs about his removal from class over backpack patches, including the “Don’t Tread On Me” patch. The school’s argument was that the flag patch had “origins in slavery;” it also argued that there were other “patches of semi-automatic weapons.” The school said Rodriguez was able to return after removing the semi-automatic patches from his backpack.

Brave Books CEO Trent Talbot said he found Rodriguez’s display of courage inspiring.

“It’s so encouraging to see young men, like Jaiden, still taking a stand for what they believe in,” Talbot told the Washington Examiner. “At Brave Books, we love setting up events like this as we witness kids’ eyes light up with imagination and hear their laughs of joy. Now seeing the next generation already desiring to hold these events for themselves is awe-inspiring.”

The story hour was organized by Grandparents 4 Kids with the “hope of involving more grandparents and families nationwide in creating a legacy of love for our country for decades to come.”

The Test of Lionhood, Sorbo’s book that Rodriguez read, details the journey of a lion cub named Lucas who braves a daring journey to find the cure for a deadly infection facing his sister.

It joins Kirk Cameron’s children’s books as part of Brave Books’s Freedom Island Book Club. The books are available through the publisher’s book of the month program.
