Embattled Starmer’s government suffers yet another blow.

From scandal to crisis and back, so goes the two-year Keir Starmer premiership.

While Northern Ireland is burning as a result of a heinous beheading attempt by an illegal migrant, Starmer loses a key ally, Defense Secretary John Healey, after a bitter dispute over the UK’s long-delayed Defense Investment Plan (DIP).

The Telegraph reported:

“[Healey] accused the Prime Minister of failing to ‘meet the moment’ with his long-delayed spending proposal, forcing him to make decisions that ‘could make the country less safe’.

Sir Keir had been expected to set out details of his plan to boost the military as soon as tomorrow. However, it was thought to have been watered down following a row between No 10, the Ministry of Defense and the Treasury.”

Healey released a very damaging letter to Starmer, saying he was left with ‘no other option’ but to quit.

“He added: ‘Without a DIP that meets the moment in this way, I am being forced to make decisions that would reduce the readiness of our forces and increase the risk to personnel on operations, and could make the country less safe’.

Mr. Healey revealed that Rachel Reeves had offered a spending increase of just 0.08 per cent by the end of the decade, taking the defense budget to 2.68 per cent of GDP – well short of the 3 per cent that the military said it would require.”

UPDATE by The Telegraph:

“Al Carns has resigned as the Armed Forces minister hours after John Healey quit as defence secretary. The Prime Minister was plunged into a fresh crisis on Thursday by the departure of his defence secretary over his refusal to commit to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence by 2030.

Mr Carns quit his post on Thursday night, accusing Sir Keir of “failing” the armed forces.

He said on X ‘We owe those who serve the UK the kit to do the job and the loyalty to stand by them when it’s done. We are failing on both. I’ve spent my whole time in government making that case. Number 10 will not listen, so I am resigning as Minister for the Armed Forces’.”
