Burgum encourages GOP to ‘get a ground game going’ to shore up Trump support – Washington Examiner

Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) encouraged the Republican Party to work seriously on raising support for former President Donald Trump on the ground, stressing the need to get Trump back in the White House.

Burgum referenced “really encouraging” polling data for Trump in the northern states and how the party needs to follow up on this data by campaigning in these areas. He noted how he took a visit on Sunday to Minnesota, a state that historically has gone blue in the Electoral College, and how he saw “Trump flags, Trump enthusiasm” everywhere he went.

“But whether it’s Minneapolis, St. Paul, Milwaukee, Madison, Detroit, Republicans, we gotta get out and work, we gotta get a ground game going,” Burgum said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom. “We know how strong the Democrats are there, and so I don’t think we should take anything for granted.”

On President Joe Biden’s chances of winning the election, Burgum argued that the president’s campaign has been undergoing an “emperor has no clothes scenario” ever since the presidential debate. He added that the Democratic Party is “completely in disarray” because of this, while Trump is “stronger than ever” and continuing his campaign without issue.

The North Dakota governor is also rumored to be on Trump’s short list for vice presidential candidates. When asked if he will be part of Trump’s administration in a hypothetical Trump victory, Burgum contended that the former president has “a great selection” for vice presidents and there will be “a ton of talent” for those who want to work for him.

Burgum’s call for on-the-ground campaign work in northern states comes after Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics moved Minnesota and Michigan toward Trump. The latter state, which Trump won in the 2016 Electoral College but lost in 2020, was placed in the “toss-up” label.

Trump already made a visit to Detroit, Michigan, last month to shore up support among minority voters. His rally schedule lists a rally in Doral, Florida, on Tuesday and another one in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
