California Assembly goes into recess after pro-Palestinian protesters chant ‘ceasefire now’ in chamber

The California Assembly went into recess after a group of pro-Palestinian protesters chanted “ceasefire now” in the rotunda.

A spokesperson for the state Capitol confirmed that around 100 protesters were in the building’s rotunda. A video posted on social media showed the group unveiling banners condemning support for Israel as they sang “ceasefire now.”

A speaker in the Assembly could be heard calling for a recess as the singing began.

The protesters were wearing “Not in Our Name” shirts, a Jewish pro-Palestinian organization.

“Jews say not in our name,” one of the banners read. Another said, “Jews say no U.S. funding for Israel’s genocide in Palestine.”

Not in Our Name is one of several prominent Jewish organizations that have staged disruptive protests throughout the United States, including protesting outside the White House and U.S. Capitol.
