Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, shared a reminder on Tuesday not to take down your Christmas tree yet because of the 12-day celebration of the holiday.

“We can’t forget the beautiful symbol of the Christmas tree itself. The Christmas tree is a magnificent symbol, and by the way, don’t you take yours down until the 12 days of Christmas are over,” Dolan said in a social media post.

He added, “The Christmas celebration goes all the way until the Epiphany, which is the Sunday after New Year’s. You keep your Christmas tree up until then.”

Dolan explained the symbolism of the Christmas tree.

“The Christmas tree, of course, symbolizes the tree of the Garden of Eden, which was destined to be the tree of life that became the tree of death when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s will,” he said. “But yet the Christmas tree also reminds us of the tree on Calvary where Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins.”

Cardinal explained that the evergreen of the Christmas tree reminds us of spring.

Despite Dolan’s message of keeping the tree up through Epiphany, many fire departments caution to keep in mind that fresh trees can catch fire if they dry out over time.

In California, two girls died on Dec. 14 when a Christmas tree started a fire in the family home.
