Officers with United States Customs and Border Protection captured nearly 500,000 fentanyl pills at Arizona’s border in a single bust.

The seizure occurred on Jan. 12 at the Area Port of Douglas when field operations officers noticed a pickup truck attempting to enter the United States, according to a Wednesday CBP news release.

A 19-year-old was identified as the driver, and the vehicle was referred for a secondary inspection.

“The search led to the discovery of 500 packages of blue pills which were concealed in a compartment in bed of the pickup,” the release read. “The weight of the packages was just 122.98 pounds, which equates to approximately 492,000 pills.”

An initial test for the pills proved positive for the properties of fentanyl.

The driver was taken into custody and handed over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, while the drugs and pickup were seized.

“Continued layered enforcement actions and our entire team’s joint efforts are key to fulfilling our mission of protecting the homeland,” Douglas Area Port Director Martin Gomez said.

“Our officers are keeping deadly drugs off our streets.”
