Charcuterie meats from Sam’s Club, Costco under recall amid salmonella outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising shoppers to avoid charcuterie meats from Sam’s Club and Costco due to a salmonella outbreak.

Some 22 states have reported cases of salmonella associated with the Busseto charcuterie sampler from Sam’s Club in the nine-ounce twin pack and the Fratelli Beretta antipasto gran beretta platter from Costco in the 12-ounce twin pack. Both feature a variety of Italian deli meats and have resulted in 47 nationwide cases and 10 hospitalizations of salmonella infections.

On Thursday, Jan. 18, federal health officials expanded a warning about salmonella poisoning tied to charcuterie meat snack trays sold at Sam’s Club and Costco stores as several people have been sickened or hospitalized after eating Busseto brand and Fratelli Beretta brand meats (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention via AP, File)

On Jan. 3, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a recall on Busseto’s platter. Subsequently, on Jan. 5, the CDC began its investigation on the Busseto and Fratelli Beretta brands. The salmonella outbreak is associated with every platter, regardless of the lot code, as the production of these products began in October of last year.

While a typical prevention method for salmonella infection is cooking meats to a safe internal temperature, the USDA and CDC recommend that the products in their entirety be thrown out as they were advertised as ready to eat. However, Sam’s Club is accepting the products for a full return, according to officials.
