While the Biden administration’s monthly child tax credit to help families with the costs of raising children has ended, multiple states are issuing their own versions of the child tax credit, including New York.

Under New York’s Empire State Child Tax Credit, the state will provide eligible families up to $330 annually per child between the ages of four and 16.

NEW HOME SALES INCREASE IN SEPTEMBER TO HIGHEST RATE IN 19 MONTHS

The exact payment for the Empire State child credit depends on income, and there are certain yearly income thresholds needed to qualify. For married filers, the household must earn $100,000 or less. Single or head-of-household filers must earn $75,000 or less, and those who are married but filing separately must earn $55,000 or less.

Households could be entitled to a payment if they received at least $100 for either or both of the credits from New York State in the tax year 2021, including an Empire State child credit and/or a New York State earned income credit.

In 2021, the Biden administration announced an extension to the monthly CTC payments, increasing the maximum child credit from $2,000 per child to $3,600 per child younger than six or up to $3,000 per child ages six through 17. However, the expanded federal child tax credit expired in 2022. New York is one of at least eight states implementing or revamping previous state child tax credits.

To apply for the tax credit, households must fill out an IT-213 form and submit it with a New York State Income tax return. The form can be downloaded here.
