Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews accused rural Americans of insanity in their voting while highlighting how close and important the 2024 election will be on “Morning Joe” Wednesday.
Matthews seemed to imply that rural Americans’ allegedly crazed voting threatens the rights of women and black people. He raised the issues of police distrust and abortion, saying certain demographics need to vote at the same levels as rural Americans to defeat them in the upcoming election. “Voters have to get out there and say, ‘Dammit, if I’m a young person, if I’m a black person, if I’m out in the streets, and I don’t trust the cops, I got to vote that way.’ And if I’m a woman, I want to protect myself and my own decisions, I’ve got to vote that way,” Matthews stated.
“This election is going to be close. And it’s going very close to a place like Pennsylvania, and you’re going to have rural people out there voting their craziness about the cult,” Matthews added. “So you better be there to match them. And you got to be there to vote against that. And I’m telling you, this is really important that you vote for your rights.”

Matthews’ statement follows his December comments saying that rural Americans harbor a deep-seated rage toward liberal elites, and seeming to liken it to the feelings of terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq following the U.S. military presence there.
“This is rural rage. They are so angry at the liberal establishment, the coastal elite, they look at people on television … ‘They don’t have to worry about us,’” Matthews stated. “And the regular guy in the country goes, ‘there they are snarling and making fun of us again’ and every time we make fun of Trump, we’re making fun of them … It’s a weird thing, but in a way it’s like fighting terrorism.”
