Chris Sununu slams Ronna McDaniel over call for Republican unity around Trump

Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) bashed Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel over her calls for Republicans to unify around former President Donald Trump.

In a Wednesday appearance on Fox News, Sununu said the GOP presidential primary is far from over and that such a call for all Republicans to support Trump is premature.

“With all due respect to Ronna McDaniel, to say that we’re just going to call it after two states … saying we don’t want to hear from all the other Republicans in the nation because it’s getting too close. That’s nonsense,” Sununu said. “You got to let the voters decide, not a bunch of political elites out of D.C.”

He portrayed McDaniel’s call as elitist, saying that support for former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who he endorsed, is “surging.”

“For these elitists to say, ‘Oh, we’re just going to stop right now as Nikki is surging. We’re just going to stop and call it a day for the incumbent.’ That’s not the process,” the New Hampshire governor added. “That’s not fair to the Republicans in the 48 other states that have a vote, that have a say. You guys don’t pick the winner. Ronna doesn’t. I sure as heck don’t. The voters do.”

He expressed confidence that Haley could pull off a win despite the fading hopes of many.

Sununu was responding to remarks from McDaniel on Tuesday after Trump’s victory in the Granite State.

“I’m looking at the math and the path going forward and I don’t see it for Nikki Haley,” McDaniel said. “I think she’s run a great campaign, but I do think there is a message that’s coming out from the voters, which is very clear.”

“We need to unite around our eventual nominee, which is going to be Donald Trump, and we need to make sure we beat Joe Biden.”
