Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has been hospitalized with an infection and will miss Tuesday evening votes, his office announced.
Grassley, 90, is “receiving antibiotic infusions at an area hospital to treat an infection,” his office said in a statement. “He is in good spirits and will return to work as soon as possible following doctors’ orders.”
More information on the Iowa senator’s condition was not immediately provided, nor was a time frame for his return to the Senate floor. Grassley is the oldest member of the upper chamber and his state hosted the Iowa caucuses Monday evening.
Grassley’s news comes one day after Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) announced that he will remain home in Wyoming this week after undergoing abdominal surgery over the weekend.
The No. 3 Senate Republican, 71, said through his office that he underwent a “successful abdominal laparoscopic surgery for an abdominal obstruction” at the Banner Wyoming Medical Center.
“Bobbi and I are grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Banner for their excellent care,” Barrasso said, mentioning his wife. “I am doing well and was discharged from the hospital this morning. I’ll continue to recover at home in Casper this week.”
“As soon as my doctors clear me for travel, I’ll return to D.C.,” the statement added.

Barrasso, a member of Republican leadership, has served in the Senate since 2007. He spent over two decades as an orthopedic surgeon before entering politics.
The Senate will spend this week taking up a short-term continuing resolution to keep the government open through March, a bipartisan priority that is certain to pass the upper chamber.
