Class-action settlement: Deadline to file claim in $16 million Crunchyroll settlement in 14 days

Eligible Crunchyroll users have 14 days to file a claim in a $16 million settlement with the streaming service over alleged privacy violations.

Subscribers of the service accused the company of disclosing their personally identifiable information to third parties without their consent. Crunchyroll has denied it violated the law but agreed to the settlement to avoid litigation. The deadline for eligible subscribers to file a claim in the settlement is Dec. 12.

To qualify for the settlement, a person must have been a registered user or viewed a website, app, or service that is owned, operated, or controlled by Crunchyroll from Sept. 8, 2020, through Sept. 20, 2023.

The amount an affected person will receive from the settlement is expected to be $30, but the amount could be more or less than that estimate, according to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Eligible users of the service must submit a claim online or through the mail in an envelope postmarked by Dec. 12.

The court has scheduled the final approval hearing for the settlement for Dec. 19. At the hearing, subscribers will be able to speak about the proposed settlement, and it will be approved or disapproved.
