College Student Was Reportedly Stalked By Ex-Boyfriend Before He Killed Her

A Michigan college student was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend in what police described as a murder-suicide, Fox 2 News reported.

Sarah Carroll, 20, was gunned down Saturday in Westland by her ex-boyfriend, identified only as Lincoln, the outlet reported. Investigators said he called 911 to confess before fatally shooting himself. Carroll’s mother told the outlet her daughter had been trying to obtain a restraining order.

“She was with Lincoln, her ex-boyfriend, for almost a year, and they were having trouble. He was stalking her for the past two months,” Jennifer Carroll said. “And he came here last night, shot her, called 911, said he killed his girlfriend, and then shot himself.” (RELATED: Former Postal Fraud Inspector Charged With Massive Theft)

Carroll’s father, James, told WXYZ News that his daughter’s ex-boyfriend had been “suffering from mental illness” when he allegedly shot her.

“He was suffering from mental illness, and we just want to get the message out that if anybody that if their children [are] suffering [from] mental illness, get them some help, get them the help that they need before something like this happens,” he said.

Family, friends and neighbors gathered Sunday for a vigil outside the Woodland Villa Apartments in Westland, where Carroll was killed. Her mother told the outlet she “never thought I would look at my daughter’s picture in the newspaper saying that she was murdered.”

Carroll was a student at Schoolcraft College, where she made the Dean’s List while working two jobs and preparing to start a third, her parents told Fox 2 News. She was studying to become a physician’s assistant.

A GoFundMe created in her memory has raised more than $17,800 to help cover funeral expenses, the page shows.

The Westland Police Department is continuing to investigate, ClickOnDetroit reported.
