Former President Donald Trump has selected Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his vice president, prompting praise from many users on social media.
Vance’s selection ends months of speculation over who Trump would pick, with possible candidates including Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and former 2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. A report from earlier this month indicated that Vance was among the final three candidates Trump had narrowed his pick to, with the others being Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND).
WHO IS JD VANCE? MEET TRUMP’S PICK FOR VICE PRESIDENT
Former Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who left the party in 2022, described Vance as “a good choice” by Trump. Gabbard herself was rumored at one point to be on Trump’s short list for vice president.
Ramaswamy, who was also rumored to be on Trump’s short list for a time, congratulated Vance on X, posting that he will be an “outstanding Vice President.”
“So proud of my friend, classmate, and fellow southwest Ohioan today,” Ramaswamy said. “We used to watch Bengals games at the bar in law school, it’s awesome we’re now here a decade later with JD joining the strongest presidential ticket in our lifetime.”
Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk, a vocal supporter of the Republican presidential nominee, also called Vance “a great choice by Trump.”
“Congratulations @JDVance1!” Elon Musk posted. “Excellent decision by @realDonaldTrump.”
“Congratulations to @JDVance1 on your nomination to be the next Vice President of the United States!” Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) posted. “His passion for America’s prosperity, service as a U.S. Marine, and commitment to our commonsense conservative values are what we need for a stronger America.”
“Congratulations to @JDVance1, our next Vice President!” Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) posted. “Being a Marine is a big win in my family. As a Dad, he knows the kitchen table issues we all face. Americans have the opportunity to unite behind this ticket and move our country forward!”
“In the past, @JDVance1 has supported Ohio’s HB68 and he has introduced The “Protect Children’s Innocence Act” to end the gender related surgical and chemical harming of children,” detransitioner activist Chloe Cole posted. “He is strong on this issue, and I support him because I believe he will stop other kids from facing the harm that has plagued my childhood and has forever altered the course of my life.”
“Congratulations to @JDVance1 on being the VP nominee,” Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) posted. “JD is an American Patriot, and he has my full support. I am all in to make Trump-Vance the winning ticket this November!”
“He’s very articulate,” Dr. Ben Carson said on Fox News. “He’s very smart. He’s young, he’s energetic, and quite frankly, we are so fortunate that Donald Trump survived over the weekend. He will win no matter who is his vice president, but having the extra of somebody like J.D. Vance, I think, is icing on the cake.”
“Congrats JD Vance, the next Vice President of the United States!” former New York Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin posted.
“Congratulations to our friend and fellow Ohioan, @JDVance1!” former Ohio congressional candidate Madison Gesiotto Gilbert posted. “He will make us all very proud as Vice President of the United States!”

“Congratulations to @JDVance1, the best choice for vice president,” journalist Christopher Rufo posted. “JD adds dimensionality to Trump and can help cultivate a counter-elite in tech, finance, and law. He has already introduced legislation to abolish DEI and will make the case with poise and brilliance. Let’s go!”

President Joe Biden has issued his own response to Vance’s selection, posting that the Ohio senator “talks a big game about working people” but that he and Trump “want to raise taxes on middle-class families while pushing more tax cuts for the rich.” He included a link for people to donate to his campaign.
Vance, 39, is the youngest vice presidential nominee since President Dwight Eisenhower picked Richard Nixon in 1952. His selection comes about two years after he won the 2022 Ohio Senate race against former Ohio Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan.
