Cory Booker shouted down by pro-Palestinian protesters

Pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted Sen. Cory Booker’s (D-NJ) speech to his constituents in New Jersey on Sunday, calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

Booker, who was in Israel at the time of the attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, welcomed the protesters, pointing to them as an example of what makes the United States “great.” Booker is the latest high-profile Democrat to be interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters.

NOVEMBER TO REMEMBER: ANY CHANCE OF AN UPSET, OR IS BESHEAR HOME DRY?

“I want to call out to everybody right now … We should know in New Jersey how privileged we are. There are so many places in our country right now—” Booker began before the first protester shouted, “Ceasefire now!”

As others joined in and the calls grew louder, Booker said, “This is what makes America great: the power to protest, the power to have free speech, the power of America.”

Protesters also shouted “Free, free Palestine!” and “Cory Booker, you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide” during the rally, according to footage of the protests posted online.

The protest came after a group of liberal activists occupied the offices of numerous Democrats on Friday to demand Congress force Israel to cease its military operations in Gaza. The activists from the far-left organization Code Pink also draped a banner in front of Booker’s office.

Code Pink also led a demonstration of more than 300,000 pro-Palestinian protesters in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, as well as a protest to disrupt Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee last week regarding President Joe Biden’s supplemental funding request, which includes more than $14 billion in aid to Israel.

Numerous protests have occurred in the U.S. as the war between Israel and Hamas approaches one month. Roughly 1,400 Israelis and thousands of Palestinians have been killed in the conflict.

The Biden administration has stood by Israel, which is a strong U.S. ally, but said a short “pause” in the attacks is necessary in order to get aid into Gaza and rescue civilians out of the region. Booker is one of a handful of senators who have backed the administration’s position, including the call for a pause.
