Cotton compares Harris fixing the border to OJ Simpson finding ‘the real killer’ – Washington Examiner

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) insisted Vice President Kamala Harris cannot be trusted to fix the southern border’s security as president, arguing her promise to do so is comparable to O.J. Simpson finding “the real killer.”

Cotton’s comment was in reference to how Simpson, who died earlier this year following a battle with cancer, was the prime suspect in the 1994 murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ron Goldman. Simpson was acquitted of their deaths in 1995. Ahead of the 2024 election, both Harris and former President Donald Trump have vowed to crack down on illegal immigration along the border, though Cotton suggested Harris’s track record showed she cannot be trusted.

“Kamala Harris promising to secure our border is like O.J. Simpson promising to find the real killer,” Cotton said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “We have a wide-open border because of Kamala Harris and Joe Biden. She’s the one that promised in her first campaign for president that she would decriminalize illegal immigration, that she would grant a mass amnesty, that she would give illegal aliens healthcare at taxpayer expense. But look what we have under Joe Biden-Kamala Harris with this wide open border. We have gang warfare breaking out in cities across America. Foreign gangs taking over apartment complexes or hotels or threatening to do so.”

Cotton continued his criticism of Harris by pointing to multiple gangs from countries, including El Salvador and Venezuela, who have entered the country under the Biden administration’s watch. He added that should Trump win the 2024 election, Trump would do “exactly what he did in his first term” by cracking down on illegal immigrant crime and deport “the millions of illegal aliens” let into the country under Harris’s watch.

The Arkansas senator then pointed to reports of how the country’s migrant crisis is impacting Springfield, Ohio, a town of roughly 50,000 residents that has been “flooded” by 20,000 migrants in recent years. Cotton argued one does not need to think these migrants are bad people to know that they are putting “severe strain” on the town’s community.

“You’ve got Haitians who don’t know how to drive, causing accidents all around the roads of Springfield,” Cotton said. “They’re flooding emergency rooms and community health centers. So, if your kid breaks his arm, good luck trying to find a doctor. The local schools have had to spend more than $400,000 on Haitian Creole translation services alone, money that could have gone for American citizens who wanted new uniforms for the football team or needed a new playground at the elementary or needed more bus transportation for the band. These are all entirely legitimate concerns the people of Springfield have been pleading with their elected leaders in Washington to address.”

Cotton then rebuked media outlets for deeming Springfield residents as “racists” for citing “credible” reports that Haitian migrants have been eating local wildlife. He added that he is unsure if these reports are true, but that they should be investigated and not be used to dismiss the concerns locals have about the effects of the Biden administration’s handling of immigration.

Sen J.D. Vance (R-OH), Trump’s 2024 running mate, has also called for a proper investigation into the reports that Haitian migrants are eating pets. He similarly was critical of how these immigrants had impacted the Springfield community, stating their lives were “destroyed by 20,000 migrants coming in and uprooting life.”

On Tuesday, Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) announced new state support for Springfield to properly address the immigrant influx, including directing the Ohio State Highway Patrol to support the city’s police department and providing funding to teach the Haitians the English language. Noticeably, the governor had expressed support for a controversial program that brought the massive influx of Haitians into Springfield.
