Debbie Dingell says GOP lacks facts in impeachment inquiry

Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) said she has spoken to GOP members in the House of Representatives who were unhappy with the vote to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

In a Sunday appearance on Meet the Press on NBC, Dingell said she does not think a full impeachment of the president is inevitable, and she said she thinks the GOP has failed to find the facts needed to garner votes for an impeachment. She said that she has spoken to Republicans who agree.

“In order to have the House pass impeachment, you got to have facts. And I’ve talked to numerous Republicans who have publicly and privately said there’s no ‘there’ there. They can’t find anything,” Dingell said.

Dingell said she had spoken to members of the House “whose arms were broken” on the road to getting the needed votes to authorize an impeachment inquiry. She said some GOP members were frustrated with the state of things.

“They’ve been looking for something for a year and have not found it.”

The congresswoman’s comments come after the House voted to authorize an impeachment inquiry into the president Wednesday by a party line 221-212 vote.

The vote came months after then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) launched an impeachment inquiry into whether Biden and his family improperly benefited from his position as vice president. The inquiry also looked into whether Biden used his sway to dissuade prosecution of his son Hunter Biden.

Leaders of the investigation so far seemed to have come up short of finding evidence to justify their claims. However, their thinking seems to be that they will have more investigative power now that the inquiry has been officially approved.

“President Biden must be held accountable for his lies and obstruction,” Rep. James Comer (R-KY) said regarding the inquiry.
