Body cam footage released Tuesday seemingly shows Democratic Minnesota state Sen. Nicole Mitchell standing in her stepmother’s home at 4:45 a.m., dressed head-to-toe in black with her hands raised.
Detroit Lakes police arrested Mitchell in April 2024 after her stepmother, Carol Mitchell, called 911 to report a break-in, Fox 9 Minneapolis reported. Prosecutors played the body cam video on the trial’s second day, showing officers confronting Mitchell as she stood in the living room clad in dark clothing. The footage also captures Carol, wearing a robe, addressing her stepdaughter as police move in: “It’s Nicole?”
“I was just trying to get a couple of my dad’s things because you wouldn’t talk to me anymore,” Mitchell replies.

Mitchell has denied any criminal intent in light of the burglary charge, insisting she entered the home only to collect her late father’s ashes and other personal belongings, according to a complaint cited by the outlet.
Her attorney reportedly argued in opening statements that Mitchell was not attempting to steal from her stepmother but was instead concerned for Carol’s well-being, citing her history of mood swings and an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
Carol reportedly told investigators she was afraid of her stepdaughter and had already sent her some of her father’s ashes, though Mitchell’s attorney counters that claim as “not totally accurate” in an interview with the Associated Press. During opening statements Tuesday, Becker County prosecutor Brian McDonald told the jury Mitchell had used a crowbar to enter the home and was holding a flashlight sheathed in a sock, according to Fox 9 Minneapolis.
In January, Republican state senators moved unsuccessfully to expel Mitchell from the chamber after her trial was delayed, the Minnesota Reformer reported. Republican state Sen. Jordan Rasmusson, who introduced the motion, argued lawmakers didn’t “need the results of a criminal trial” to determine Mitchell was unfit to serve her constituents.
“We shouldn’t be complicit in delaying justice for the victim of a crime by allowing Sen. Mitchell to use her membership in this body to shield herself from criminal consequences,” Rasmusson said, according to the Reformer.
Mitchell’s Senate office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller’s request for comment.
