Democrat Jared Moskowitz calls for ‘everyone’ to consider supporting censure of Rashida Tlaib

Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) said Tuesday that each member of Congress should consider supporting a censure of Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for her refusal to correct a post alleging Israel was responsible for the bombing of a hospital in Gaza, a claim she has stood firm on since.

Moskowitz told Fox News’s Kayleigh McEnany, “I think once we get a House speaker here, I think that censure resolution will come to the floor. And I do think it’s something that everyone should consider.”

“Israel just bombed the Baptist Hospital killing 500 Palestinians (doctors, children, patients) just like that,” Tlaib wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, directly following news of an explosion at a hospital in Gaza.

However, U.S. and Israeli officials soon after said evidence suggested Israel was not to blame for the blast, with National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson saying on Oct. 18 that while the agency continues to collect information, the “current assessment, based on analysis of overhead imagery, intercepts, and open-source information, is that Israel is not responsible for the explosion at the hospital in Gaza yesterday.”

Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari also said on Oct. 18 that Hamas knew the strike came from Gaza and inflated the casualty count to hide what happened.

Despite the developments and the backlash she has gotten about the post, Tlaib has kept the post on X.

“I continue to be disappointed in members of Congress who are not willing to listen to U.S. intelligence and listen to the Biden administration, who have said Israel had nothing to do with the issue that happened in the parking lot of the hospital,” Moskowitz said.

“Let’s remember, the hospital wasn’t hit. The hospital’s still there. It’s the parking lot of the hospital — that was the first lie that was told,” he explained. “The second lie that was told was that over 500 people died there. There’s no proof of that.”

“And the third lie that was told was that it was Israel. All of those things have turned out to be inaccurate,” the congressman said. “U.S. intelligence is saying that. Any member of Congress who continues to trust Hamas’s information over U.S. information is obviously deeply concerning.”

Even after scrutiny of her claims, Tlaib stood firm on the matter on Monday. “I agree with the United Nations that an independent investigation is necessary. I cannot uncritically accept Israel’s denials of responsibility as fact,” she said in a statement.

She justified her stance by noting, “Both the Israeli and United States governments have long, documented histories of misleading the public about wars and war crimes.”

Two members of Congress have already filed resolutions to censure Tlaib amid the war in the Middle East. Rep. Jack Bergman (R-MI) filed a resolution against the Michigan Democrat shortly after the Hamas terrorist attack and Tlaib’s subsequent statement. He cited his reason for the move as “her long-standing history of antisemitic and racist rhetoric towards Israel,” adding that it “cannot go unchecked.”

“I’d hope we can all agree that the terrorists raping women, murdering festivalgoers, and decapitating babies is a crime against all of humanity,” he said, referring to her statement, in which Tlaib said Palestinians are living under Israeli “occupation,” further calling it an “apartheid system.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced another resolution to censure Tlaib on Tuesday, which cited her comments on the Gaza hospital explosion. Greene’s resolution also pointed to Tlaib’s involvement with a rally calling for a ceasefire that overtook the U.S. Capitol, resulting in a reported hundreds of arrests of demonstrators.
