Democrats capitalize on skeptical Supreme Court to target 14 vulnerable Republicans – Washington Examiner

With the Supreme Court appearing to be skeptical about tightening restrictions on an abortion pill, Democrats are hitting vulnerable Republicans on their anti-abortion stances.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent out 14 press releases reminding voters about the records several Republicans have on abortion rights. The DCCC is targeting Republicans in swing districts with voting records that do not support access to abortion.

The releases are formulaic, beginning with the representative’s name and a list of reasons voters who support abortion access should oppose them returning to Congress.

“REMINDER: David Schweikert Pioneered Same Legislation As the Anti-Abortion Groups Currently in Front of Supreme Court,” one release said.

The DCCC launched the campaign as the Supreme Court heard a case that could restrict access to the abortion pill mifepristone.

“As the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments that could ‘pave the way toward a national abortion ban’ by severely restricting access to the medication mifepristone, Juan Ciscomani and House Republicans have been simultaneously mounting a multiple front attack on reproductive freedoms in America,” another release said.

Reps. David Schweikert (R-AZ) and Juan Ciscomani’s (R-AZ) names could be replaced with any of the other 12 names and the release would have a similar sentiment.

Democrats are targeting districts like Schweikert’s. He represents Arizona’s newly redrawn 1st District, which has voted increasingly blue over the years. In 2022, Schweikert narrowly maintained his seat by around 3,000 votes.

Other Republican representatives being targeted by the DCCC’s list include Reps. Ken Calvert (R-CA), John Duarte (R-CA), Mike Garcia (R-CA), Kevin Kiley (R-CA), Michelle Steel (R-CA), David Valadao (R-CA), John James (R-MI), Scott Perry (R-PA), Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), Bryan Steil (R-WI), Brandon Williams (R-NY), and Ryan Zinke (R-MT).

The barrage comes off the back of Democrats picking up several victories when they tout access to abortion as a primary plank of their campaign.

“A vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris is a vote to restore Roe, and a vote for Donald Trump is a vote to ban abortion across the country,” Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Biden’s campaign manager, said in January. “These are the stakes in 2024.”
