Democrats emerge as top two spenders in House races – Washington Examiner

In the early months of a fierce election year, two House Democrats lead the way as top spenders on campaign advertisements over the airwaves.

Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Angie Craig (D-MN) emerged as the top House spenders on campaign television advertisements early in the year, according to a report from Punchbowl News citing data from AdImpact.

Suozzi, who won a special election for former Rep. George Santos’s seat in February, spent $3.5 million on television ads in that endeavor, while Craig has reserved $2.4 million in ad buys.

Both members are in districts being targeted by Republicans in November, as the GOP hopes to keep control of the House of Representatives. Suozzi’s seat flipped to the GOP in the 2022 election, but Santos was expelled from the chamber in December 2023 after being federally indicted in October, and Craig’s seat is on the National Republican Congressional Committee’s target list.

The Cook Political Report rates the partisan voting index of Craig’s district as “Democrat +1,” while Suozzi’s district is rated as “Democrat +3.” The race in Craig’s district is characterized by the outlet as “lean Democrat,” while Suozzi’s is rated as “likely Democrat.”

Republicans are holding on to a narrow majority, which tightened after Suozzi’s special election win earlier this year, and will be eyeing to win vulnerable Democratic seats to solidify it.

Other top spenders through the first three months of the year, according to the report, included Republican Kelly Daughtry in the primary for North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District, with $2 million spent, and Republican Fred Von Canon in the same race with $1.5 million spent.

Daughtry and Brad Knott advanced to the runoff in the primary for that seat, while Von Canon failed to advance.
