Democrats pour another $10 million into state legislative races for November – Washington Examiner

Democrats are trying to boost down-ballot candidates in the November elections with an eye toward some of the key states for President Joe Biden in the top-of-the-ballot contest.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announced Monday a $10 million investment in key states where it plans to focus on down-ballot races, even as the presidential and congressional elections get the most attention. The DLCC has named its effort the “Summer of the States,” with the committee claiming it is an “early call to action” to focus on lower-profile contests in November.

“With our democracy and fundamental freedoms on the line, the Summer of the States is the critical window to make key investments and build the infrastructure needed for Democrats to push past Republican efforts and boost our chances for victory in November,” DLCC President Heather Williams said. “For a fraction of what is spent on federal races, we can harness state-level power to keep Donald Trump out of the White House and stop his MAGA agenda in the states.”

The investments will go toward the DLCC’s efforts in eight key states. In Minnesota, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, Democrats are attempting to keep their state legislature majorities, while in New Hampshire and Arizona, they are looking to win majorities in legislatures. In North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Kansas, they are looking to break into Republican dominance in state legislatures where a Democratic governor is present.

In most of the states being targeted with this round of investments, Democrats are also looking to win races at the top of the ticket. Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are pivotal states in the races for the presidency and control of the Senate.

Democrats are looking to put pressure on Republicans in several states, even as former President Donald Trump leads Biden in most polls nationally and in swing states. In Florida, Democrats are running candidates in every state legislative race despite it not being a target state.

Republicans have majority control over 29 state legislatures, while Democrats have majority over 20 state legislatures. Only Pennsylvania has Democrats in the majority for its state Senate, the GOP, and its state House.
