Democrats roll out $100 million plan to win back the House on abortion rights – Washington Examiner

The House Majority PAC is rolling out a $100 million campaign to bring back a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives this November by focusing on abortion.

While the PAC’s Reproductive Freedom Accountability Fund will be allocated to motivating voter turnout in swing districts, the fund will also be directed toward House districts without competitive presidential or Senate races, including in New York, California, Oregon, Washington, and Virginia.

In a memo released Wednesday, a PAC spokesperson said “the success of ballot measures in deep-red Kansas to blue states with local abortion protections – and the February special election in NY-03” proves abortion rights are a winning issue going into the November election.

Access to abortion and birth control has been in the spotlight after Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, removing federal protections for abortion. Lauded by the GOP as a victory for human life, the battle over abortion rights has returned to the states. The Democratic Party has used the issue to motivate voters to head to the polls this election. Abortion rights are on the ballot across the country, including in swing states such as Arizona and Nevada.

The Congressional Leadership Fund is a major super PAC that supports Republicans, and it has pumped $22 million in New York House races alone to defend 2022 GOP gains. The CLF responded to its rival’s announcement Wednesday.

“With voters rejecting Democrats on just about every issue under the sun, this is their sole strategy,” CLF President Dan Conston told the Washington Examiner.

“In blue states where abortion is legal, Republican candidates can clearly and empathetically communicate this is a state issue and settled law,” Conston added.

The House Majority PAC’s Reproductive Freedom Accountability Fund does not only target Republicans on abortion.  The newly released memo repeatedly attacks the GOP for trying to ban in vitro fertilization and birth control.

IVF is the process by which sperm and eggs are combined in a lab to create embryos, which are then implanted in the uterus. Extra embryos are commonly created during the IVF process, and while most are stored away and frozen, some are destroyed or thrown out. There are as many as 1.5 million frozen embryos in the country due to IVF.

In February, an Alabama couple’s embryos were accidentally destroyed while they were going through the IVF process at a fertility clinic. They brought a lawsuit against the hospital and clinic, with the Alabama Supreme Court ultimately issuing a ruling that embryos are human. The decision entailed consequences for IVF facilities, making them liable for destroyed or discarded embryos.

While the Left has derided the Alabama decision as anti-IVF, Republicans say they support responsible IVF that protects embryos.

Earlier this month, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Katie Britt (R-AL) led the Senate GOP in introducing legislation that would ban states from receiving Medicaid funding if they banned IVF. In a press release for the IVF Protection Act, Cruz said the practice should be “fully protected at the federal level.”

So far this election cycle, the House Majority PAC has reserved over $186 million in initial television and digital reservations, while the CLF has reserved $141 million for television, streaming, and digital platforms. Both PACs have broken spending records this cycle.
