Democrats are issuing a stark warning for President Joe Biden that emphasizing his recent executive order to limit asylum-seekers without also advancing legal protections for Dreamers could hurt his reelection prospects.
Reps. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX), Delia Ramirez (D-IL), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) held a press conference with a group of Dreamers on Wednesday, marking the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
In the wake of Biden’s new executive order aimed to limit the number of migrant crossings of the southern border, the group of Democrats is pushing for the administration to launch another round of executive orders to create some balance between the strict immigration crackdown and immigrant rights.
The matter is a personal one for Ramirez. Her husband could face deportation if protections are not extended for Dreamers. The Illinois representative warned of dire consequences for Biden if he sticks with restrictive immigration policies without balancing it by creating legal pathways for immigrants such as her husband.
“If neither [candidate] is going to deliver, then I’m in a really frustrating place, and don’t blame me if you lose this election,” Ramirez said, speaking with reporters following the press conference.
“I think people need to do what is right for them,” she said. “It’s really difficult for me to tell someone that I’m going to keep promising you and begging you to vote for someone that can’t deliver. I take it very personal. My own credibility is on the line in this moment.”
Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are making it clear they are still fuming over Biden’s decision to move forward with the immigration-related executive action.
“I was deeply disappointed by last week’s executive order, which significantly bars asylum-seekers and provides no relief to our immigrant communities,” said Garcia, who is the CHC whip. “We know that enforcement-only policies will not work and have never worked. They didn’t work under Trump, and they are not going to work under this administration.
“Instead of wasting valuable time, pushing Trump-era policies, our president should provide relief to Dreamers and other unauthorized immigrants living in our country,” she added.
Garcia and other members of the CHC presented a variety of reforms during a meeting with the president at the White House last month, including efforts to grant new labor protections and legal rights to undocumented farmworkers, expand work permits to more immigrants, shield the undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens, and apply protections to Dreamers. They also want Biden to create a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
The Texas congresswoman said she believes the Biden administration could be working toward implementing some of the reforms her group advocated during their meeting.
“There’s already been some follow-up meetings with members of my team on a couple of the issues we’ve raised,” Garcia told the Washington Examiner. “The Congressional Hispanic Caucus raised three to five solid executive order options that we think he clearly has.”
Biden has signaled more action could be coming after unveiling the new executive order last week.
“Today, I have spoken about what we need to do to secure the border,” Biden said on June 4. “In the weeks ahead, and I mean the weeks ahead, I will speak to how we can make our immigration system more fair and more just.”
However, a pathway to citizenship has been controversial for decades, especially among many Republicans who continue to characterize the policy as “amnesty.” That is why some Democrats are emphasizing it’s time for Biden to work unilaterally.
“You know the realities of the makeup of Congress right now,” Padilla said. “We urge President Biden to exercise that authority. He has the executive authority to provide relief for caregivers, for Dreamers, for DACA recipients, and the undocumented spouses of United States citizens.
“He can and he should, because the American dream is worth fighting for,” Padilla added.
Days after Biden’s executive order was unveiled, eight men from Tajikistan suspected of having ties to ISIS were arrested in major U.S. cities this past weekend. The men, who had reportedly crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally but were processed and released by the Border Patrol, were caught in a sting operation after they were flagged with “national security concerns, including ties to ISIS,” according to multiple reports.
“The only thing more shocking than our unsecure southern border is that we haven’t had a terror attack on our soil — yet,” said Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), the chairman of the Senate Republicans’ campaign arm during a Wednesday press conference. “Make no mistake. It was Joe Biden who rolled back the successful Trump policies that kept this nation and our southern border much safer.
“It was Joe Biden who made the border a lot more unsecure, and it was Senate Democrats who enabled him for the past 3 1/2 years,” Daines added.
However, some Democrats are pushing back, emphasizing that they do not believe Biden’s latest executive order is the appropriate way to respond.

“Of course, there’s always concerns on border,” Ramirez said. “I think that’s exactly why a number of us continue to say we don’t have proper staffing at the border. We should be properly training our officers, making sure that we have adequate staff that is processing, and of course, have the technology necessary to be able to do the kind of screening and building the partnerships with other countries.
“We know the majority of the people coming through those borders are women and children — I saw them at the Darién Gap in Panama,” she added. “Restricting asylum to women and children who desperately need us right now is the opposite of who we say we are.”
