Derrick Van Orden faces calls to apologize over State of the Union outburst by Wisconsin foe – Washington Examiner

Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) is at odds with Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) again, this time over his heckle during the State of the Union address.

While President Joe Biden addressed Congress and the nation Thursday, he took a swipe at his
Republican opponent, claiming former President Donald Trump “failed the most basic presidential duty that he owes to the American people: the duty to care.”

“Lies!” Van Orden shouted.

Pocan responded to the outburst in a statement Friday. The representative has often called out Van Orden, most recently over his expletive-laced interaction with a group of Senate pages in the Capitol last summer.

“Derrick Van Orden continues to embarrass Wisconsin and the United States Congress with his constant unbecoming behavior. He must formally apologize to President Biden for last night’s outburst during the State of the Union,” Pocan wrote. “It’s one thing to be a Trump fanatic; it’s another when you’re a member of Congress. This constant pattern of unnecessary outbursts, whether it’s teen pages in the Capitol Rotunda or administration officials at a classified briefing, has many of us worried about his temperament and perhaps his soberness.”

Van Orden’s office did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment. On X, he referred to the address as a “campaign speech.”

“Tonight’s address lacked honesty and transparency, but the American people know their paychecks do not go as far as they once did, and their communities are less safe than they were three years ago,” Van Orden wrote. “The government should set an environment for Americans to succeed, not one that makes it more difficult to get by. I stand strongly with the American people and will continue working with my Republican colleagues to get our nation back on the right track.”
