A member of Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) security team was quick to take down a climate protester who interrupted the governor on stage during a campaign stop in Ames, Iowa, on Thursday evening. 

One day after debating former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, DeSantis campaigned in Iowa four days ahead of the state’s caucuses. He was at his fourth campaign stop of the day when three activists from the Sunrise Movement shouted remarks about him, according to the Associated Press. They accused DeSantis of taking money from the fossil fuel industry. 

A video posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, appeared to show one protester rushing onstage while DeSantis was speaking. The person was holding a banner that read “DESANTIS: CLIMATE CRIMINAL,” and security swiftly tackled him to the ground. 

“Ron DeSantis is a climate criminal,” the man yelled. “He’s a climate criminal! How much money are you taking from oil companies?”

DeSantis responded as the incident unfolded, saying, “This is what’s wrong with the college system right there.” 

The protester belonged to the same group that interrupted DeSantis during his Fox News town hall on Tuesday, sending the governor the same message.

On its website, the group describes itself as a “movement of young people fighting to stop the climate crisis and win a green new deal” working to “force the government to end the era of fossil fuel elites, invest in Black, brown and working class communities.” 

Two protesters were forcibly removed from the campaign event, according to the Associated Press.
