DeSantis compares House to ‘chickens with their heads cut off’ as speaker chaos continues

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) compared the current inability of the House of Representatives to function without an elected speaker to “chickens with their heads cut off” as the chamber marks 21 days since it last had an elected presiding officer.
The 2024 Republican presidential candidate said he does not believe the dysfunction of House Republicans is hurting his campaign because he represents “the antidote to the chaos.” The comment came while speaking to reporters in New Hampshire on Tuesday.

“I don’t think it’s hurting me because I think I represent the antidote to the chaos. They can’t get their act together. They don’t have — it’s like chickens with their heads cut off. They’re not delivering results that our voters wanted. A lot of this, there’s personalities, there’s drama, palace intrigue. That is not dealing with the issues that people care about,” DeSantis said.
The former congressman turned governor highlighted his and Gov. Chris Sununu’s (R-NH) leadership in their respective states as a contrast to “chaos” in Washington, D.C.
“In Florida — and I think Chris is the same way here — we measure based on results. It’s not about getting a cheap click here or there; it’s not about this or that. We don’t do drama. We don’t do any of that in Florida,” DeSantis continued.

The Florida governor then detailed problems facing the country, which he said are going unaddressed by Congress, including the U.S.-Mexico border, inflation, and crime.
“We need somebody to come to D.C. who’s going to bring order to this chaos and who’s finally going to deliver results. That’s what I’ll do, and I think what we’ve done in Florida provides a sharp contrast with how things are going in Washington right now,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis’s attempt to contrast himself from Congress comes as the House of Representatives marks three weeks since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted from the speakership by eight Republicans and all House Democrats. The House GOP unsuccessfully selected two speaker designees who failed to garner enough support to be elected, leading them to hold a third conference vote on Tuesday.

House Republicans selected House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) to be their third speaker designee since McCarthy was ousted earlier this month, but Emmer’s time as speaker designee lasted just hours before he bowed out of the race after resistance by roughly 20 members of the GOP conference.
The House GOP will now select a fourth speaker designee following a candidate’s forum, which is scheduled for Tuesday night. The House of Representatives has been without an elected presiding officer since Oct. 3.
