DNC ramps up efforts to kill RFK Jr.’s bid with billboards in Michigan

The Democratic National Committee has increased its efforts to kill Robert F Kennedy Jr.’s bid for the White House with the launch of four new billboards in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The new billboards emphasize his aligned Super PAC, American Values 2024, and its ties to a supporter of former President Donald Trump, Timothy Mellon.

“RFK Jr. isn’t fooling anyone. He’s powered and bankrolled by the same extreme MAGA donor as Donald Trump, and Trump’s allies have already called him a useful chaos agent in this election,” DNC rapid response director Alex Floyd said in a statement. “Michiganders deserve better than a stalking horse for extreme MAGA Republicans.”

The billboards feature a headshot of Kennedy on one side, and Trump on the other, with the words “RFK Jr. powered by MAGA Trump. Same biggest donor Timothy Mellon,” in the center.

The billboards come after Mellon reportedly donated $15 million to American Values 2024 last year, according to Federal Election Commission fillings. Mellon also donated $10 million to a Trump-aligned Super PAC the same year.

A Kennedy campaign spokesperson hit back at the criticisms, claiming donors are tired of the main party system, and that’s why they are supporting the independent’s dark-horse bid.

“Donors from across the political spectrum are supporting the Kennedy campaign as they are tired of the corruption in the two-party system,” the spokesperson said in a statement to the Hill. “Instead, donors want an independent candidate who will heal the divide, restore the middle class, end the forever wars, unravel corporate capture, and the end chronic disease epidemic.”

The new billboards coincide with the start of Kennedy’s tour in the Great Lakes state, which is considered a battleground in the 2024 election. Kennedy has been largely viewed as a “spoiler” candidate, who Democrats fear will pull votes from President Joe Biden.

Biden has struggled to maintain his approval ratings in Michigan after the state handed him a crucial Electoral College victory against Trump in 2020. The DNC’s billboards in the state follow a complaint it filed against the controversial candidate on Friday.
