DNC targets Nikki Haley over Social Security and Medicare reform talk

EXCLUSIVE — Democrats are jumping on 2024 Republican presidential candidates, particularly former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, for proposing entitlement and tax reform.

“Nikki Haley was a champion for MAGAnomics before ‘MAGAnomics’ existed — calling to cut Social Security and Medicare and slash taxes for the ultra-wealthy,” Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Sarafina Chitika told the Washington Examiner. “Make no mistake about it — Haley is just another vessel to ram through [former President] Donald Trump’s economic agenda that would leave millions of Americans behind and line the pockets of her wealthy buddies and special interest donors.”

Chitika continued, “The American people have rejected this out-of-touch agenda time and time again, and they’ll reject it next year no matter who stumbles out of the Republican primary.”

The DNC’s criticism, amplifying similar complaints from President Joe Biden‘s campaign, comes after Haley told CNBC she supported tinkering with Social Security and Medicare and after last year’s midterm cycle, in which Democrats made that an election issue for Republicans up and down the ticket.

“Social Security goes bankrupt in 10 years. Medicare goes bankrupt in eight,” Haley said Wednesday. “Anyone that says they’re not going to take on entitlement reform means they’re going to go in and be president and leave the country bankrupt. You can’t do that.”

Democrats have increasingly sought to undermine Haley as she surges in the polls, averaging 14% of the primary vote in Iowa, though still remaining 43 percentage points behind Trump, according to RealClearPolitics.

The 2024 contest between Biden and his Republican opponent is tipped to turn on the economy as the president tries to underscore his economic accomplishments, marketed as “Bidenomics.”
