Doug Burgum will not run for third term as North Dakota governor

Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) announced on Monday that he will not seek a third term in the governor’s residence in the Peace Garden State.

Burgum, who ended his unsuccessful Republican presidential campaign last month, said he and his wife Kathryn were “eternally grateful” for being elected twice to be governor and first lady of North Dakota, respectively, in a statement released on Monday morning.

“Serving as governor and first lady of the great state of North Dakota has been one of the most incredible and rewarding experiences of our lives. Kathryn and I are eternally grateful to the citizens of North Dakota for twice giving us this opportunity to serve the state we love so much,” Burgum said on Monday.

He also touted his accomplishments during his time as governor, including the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and economic success under his administration. Burgum concluded his statement by saying that he has left the state in an “extremely well-positioned” spot for the future.

“There’s never been a better time to live, work and raise a family in North Dakota. Our state is extremely well-positioned for the future thanks to the efforts of everyone on Team ND to empower people, improve lives and inspire success,” he said.

Burgum was first elected in 2016 and reelected in 2020 in landslide victories in the GOP-dominated state. No Republicans have announced bids for the governorship, but state Sen. Tom Campbell is reportedly eying a run.

The primary for the governor’s race is slated for June 11, with the general election set for Nov. 5. North Dakota’s governor’s race has been rated as “safe Republican” by the Cook Political Report and has a partisan voting index of Republican plus-20, per the outlet.
