Law enforcement officials have determined that the driver of a vehicle that collided with part of President Joe Biden’s motorcade Sunday night was impaired and have leveled charges.

Biden and first lady Jill Biden traveled to Wilmington, Delaware, over the weekend to observe the anniversary of the death of Biden’s first wife, Neilia, and their 1-year-old daughter, Naomi, in 1972.

The Bidens were exiting an event at his campaign headquarters on Sunday evening when a vehicle slammed into one of the Secret Service SUVs blocking off nearby roads.

Biden appeared surprised, and he and the first lady were quickly ushered into their own vehicle before being whisked away from the scene.

“Today, at approximately 8:09 p.m., a Secret Service vehicle securing the President’s motorcade route was struck by another vehicle in Wilmington, DE,” U.S. Secret Service spokesman Special Agent Steve Kopek said in a statement on Sunday. “There was no protective interest associated with this event and the President’s motorcade departed without incident. Additional questions pertaining to this incident should be directed to Wilmington Police Department.”

“The Wilmington Police Department is investigating the motor vehicle collision, which did not result in any injuries,” Wilmington Police spokesman David Karas added. “Investigators are also working to determine if impairment was a factor.”

“Following our investigation, Wilmington Police have determined that this was an accidental collision and have charged the driver of the striking vehicle — a 46-year-old Wilmington man — with Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol and Inattentive Driving,” Karas added in a follow-up statement Monday morning.

The White House directed questions regarding the incident back to the Secret Service but reassured the Washington Examiner that the Bidens were “fine.”
