At least five children in Virginia were taken to the hospital Tuesday after ingesting fentanyl-laced gummy bears that one student had accidentally brought from home, authorities said.

The accidental poisoning occurred at Central Elementary School in Amherst, and seven total students “experienced a reaction to ingesting gummy bears at school,” the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office said.

During an investigation, authorities examined the gummy bears, which tested positive for fentanyl, according to a report.

“Of the seven students, five needed medical attention,” the sheriff’s office said. “Two of the students were transported by EMS and three of the students were transported by their parents.”

Emergency personnel were immediately made aware of the situation after the students began to display an “allergic reaction,” the report noted, and it was later determined that the laced gummy bears had been brought to the elementary school by a student.

“We will work with the Sheriff’s Office as they continue their investigation,” Amherst County Public Schools said in a statement. “The families of the students have been notified of the results.”
