Elon Musk is considering a new way to make money for his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter — selling off old handles that have fallen out of use.

Forbes has verified emails between X employees that prove a new strategy within the company to offer desirable handles, the profile names that identify users, up on the market. One handle had a price tag of $50,000, according to the emails.

Currently, when an X user has not appeared on the platform for a month, the account is considered inactive. After that, their account is vulnerable to being removed or possibly purchased.

This comes some months after Musk offered a paid verification process. Once an account pays for verified status, their posts are allowed to be longer, they can edit posts, see reduced ads, and are ranked higher in conversations. Musk has offered many subscription-based services on the app in an apparent attempt to add revenue for the platform that lost advertisers when he took over.

However, CEO Linda Yaccarino has clarified that since the start of the summer, advertisers have been returning. As of last month, 90 of X’s top 100 advertisers from 2022 had returned. In total, some 1,700 advertisers returned during this last quarter.

X still has more than 500 million monthly active users, with some 1.5 million sign-ups daily. More than 7.8 billion minutes are spent on X every day.

October marked one year since Musk took over.
