‘EXCHANGE OF OPINIONS’: In the Vatican for Easter, VP Vance Faces off With Catholic Church’s Top Diplomat Over Migrants, Has Private Audience With Ailing Pope Francis (VIDEOS)

Vance met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican’s foreign minister.

In his trip to Italy, US Vice President JD Vance met with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy PM Mateo Salvini in Rome, solidifying the close relations between the two countries.

“I’m grateful every day for this job, but particularly today where my official duties have brought me to Rome on Good Friday. I had a great meeting with Prime Minister Meloni and her team, and will head to church soon with my family in this beautiful city. I wish all Christians all over the world, but particularly those back home in the US, a blessed Good Friday. He died so that we might live.”

But another part of his journey was to take place during Easter celebrations in the Vatican.

After attending Good Friday mass in St. Peter’s Cathedral on Saturday, Vance met with senior Vatican officials for talks that followed previous sharp criticism by Pope Francis of the Donald J. Trump administration’s immigration policy.

CNN reported:

“The Vatican said that during the meeting an ‘exchange of opinions’ took place concerning migrants, refugees, and prisoners.

The vice president, a Catholic, has been visiting Rome with his family over the Easter weekend and attended a Good Friday service in St. Peter’s Basilica.”

Vance met Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See Secretary of State (Vatican’s top diplomat), and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican’s foreign minister.

“‘There was an exchange of opinions on the international situation, especially regarding countries affected by war, political tensions and difficult humanitarian situations, with particular attention to migrants, refugees, and prisoners’, according to a Vatican communique released following the meeting.

Vance’s office later released its own readout, which stated that the vice president and Parolin discussed ‘their shared religious faith, Catholicism in the United States, the plight of persecuted Christian communities around the world, and President Trump’s commitment to restoring world peace’.”

Today (19) he visited the Vatican with his family ahead of talks with top officials.

“Ahead of Saturday’s talks, Parolin told Italian newspaper La Repubblica that the ‘current US administration is very different from what we are used to and, especially in the West, from what we have relied on for many years’.”

Later in the day, it was divulged that Vance has a short, private meeting with ailing Pope Francis.
