A viral video shared on X purports to show U.K. police officers arresting a young girl in connection to recent riots related to the Southport stabbing.
SURREAL what happened in the United Kingdom, where police officers arrested and subjected a girl to a search, forcing her to remove her jewelry, bracelets and earrings.
What kind of abuse is this?
Why is it allowed? pic.twitter.com/AbUgkVrwzf— Edgar ✟ 🇪🇦(@Edgar___es) August 6, 2024
Verdict: Misleading
The claim is misleading. A photo of what appears to be the same young girl on Getty Images shows her being arrested by U.K. police at a pro-Palestine protest.
Fact Check:
King Charles III has called for “mutual respect and understanding” amid ongoing riots in the U.K., according to Reuters. The riots were sparked following accusations that the suspect who committed the Southport stabbing was an “Islamist migrant,” the outlet reported.
The X video, viewed over 100,000 times as of writing, purports to show U.K. police officers arresting a young girl in connection to recent riots related to the Southport stabbing.
“SURREAL what happened in the United Kingdom, where police officers arrested and subjected a girl to a search, forcing her to remove her jewelry, bracelets and earrings,” the video’s caption begins. King Charles III delivered the King’s Speech setting out the new Labour government’s policies and proposed legislation for the coming parliamentary session,” the image’s caption reads.
The outfit the young girl is wearing resembles that of the girl in the video.
Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find the viral X video referenced in any credible news reports about the recent riots occurring in the U.K. Actually, the opposite is true. On August 9, Misbar reported the claim was misleading, citing the same photo from Getty Images. In addition, the London Metropolitan Police Department has not publicly re-shared the video. A spokesperson for the London Metropolitan Police Department denied the video was linked to the recent riots.
“This video has been sent to us several times this week – no she was not arrested in relation to riots, it was something a few months back,” the same spokesperson said.
