A post shared to Facebook claims that Meghan Markle is planning to leave the US following President-elect Donald Trump’s re-election.
Verdict: False
There is no evidence that Markle is planning to leave America in the aftermath of the 2024 election.
Fact Check:
Social media users are claiming Markle, the wife of Prince Harry, is “really considering” the option to “leave the United States.”
“Goodbye USA! Meghan Markle decides to leave the United States!? She is really considering it and at this point there are little doubt. The reason is OBVIOUS Well Goodbye Meg, don’t forget to take your husband with you,” one post reads.
There is no evidence for this claim. The post links to an article which suggests that Markle will leave America because Trump won a second term in the White House during the presidential election on Nov. 5. However, the article does not cite any source to verify that the claim is any more than speculation.
Daily Mail editor Charlotte Griffiths did tell GB News that Markle “may want to leave America” after Trump’s victory. But Griffiths was not saying Markle would leave and the comment was more commentary and speculation.
Additionally, the duchess has not posted or said anything herself to indicate that she wants or plans to leave the US, nor has the couple’s official website or Instagram account mentioned this possibility, according to Lead Stories.
Markle’s lack of comment about the election results follows her recent history of remaining quiet about American politics. In September, the couple released a statement encouraging people to register to vote but did not endorse any candidate in the election.
After Nov. 5, Harry and Meghan’s first statement together was about the United Nations Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children—not the election results—and was posted to the Archewell Foundation, which the couple founded. Trump said earlier this year that Prince Harry could face deportation if he lied about his past drug use in his visa application, per NBC News. A court case lodged by the Heritage Foundation to reveal Harry’s application began in June 2023, with a judge ruling in Sept. 2024 that the documents would stay private, BBC News reported.
