FACT CHECK: Did the President of Mexico Refuse To Acknowledge Donald Trump As The 2024 Election Winner?

A post going viral on X claims that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has refused to recognize Donald Trump as the winner of the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election.

The President of Mexico just said she won’t recognize Trump as the winner of the elections yet.

That’s fine, but you’ll recognize him when he puts 75% tariffs on everything from your country.

What a dumb move she’s making here. pic.twitter.com/faV1hGhNZL

Verdict: False

She has congratulated Trump in a post on X following the results of the election.

Fact Check:

The 2024 Presidential Election was decided on November 5th, with former President Donald Trump winning a second non-consecutive term in office. One topic of conversation was going to be how world leaders would react to a Trump comeback victory.

A post being shared on X claims that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was deliberately refusing to acknowledge Donald Trump as the election winner. The post goes on to taunt her, saying that she will essentially have no choice but to recognize him, claiming he plans to slap a 75% tariff on goods coming from Mexico. The Trump campaign has said that tariffs of up to 25% could be levied should Mexico not work to improve the U.S. border situation, according to the Guardian.

The viral X post is misleading, however. It is implying that Sheinbaum meant disrespect to Trump, but she was simply waiting for the official results to come in before doing so.

President Sheinbaum does a daily news conference every morning, and the speech in the X post was made early on November 6th. She was seemingly waiting for a more official confirmation of the election’s victor, stating that “we are going to wait today for the vote count to end in some states before we issue an official statement. The Associated Press called the race for Trump at 5:36am.

Sheinbaum posted on X at 4:30pm on November 6th, officially recognizing Donald Trump as the next United States President.
