A post shared on X claims that San Francisco 49ers player Nick Bosa is the first NFL player to openly support a candidate in the 2024 presidential election cycle.
There have been multiple reports of NFL players supporting candidates in the 2024 presidential election cycle before.
Fact Check:
Social media users are claiming that Bosa is the first NFL player to openly support a candidate in the 2024 presidential election cycle.
“🚨BREAKING: #49ers star Nick Bosa crashed the Sunday Night Football interview with a “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” cap showing his SUPPORT FOR DONALD TRUMP. Bosa is the first #NFL player to openly announce support for a political candidate this cycle,” one user wrote.
The claim is false. Bosa is not the only active NFL player to express support for a candidate in the 2024 presidential election cycle. Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Thomas Booker has expressed support for 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has endorsed 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
In March, Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow posed for a group photo with Trump and Bosa, though there is no evidence he has expressed vocal suppoqt for the former president.
There have also been multiple reports of former NFL players endorsing candidates in the 2024 presidential election cycle. FOr example, Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Richard Dent has expressed his support for Harris and former NFL quarterback Brett Farve has expressed his support for Trump.
The video included with the post depicts Bosa interrupting San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy’s televised interview via jumping out from behind Purdy with a “Make America Great Again” hat. Although Trump popularized the “Make America Great Again” political slogan, Bosa’s hat itself does not indicate endorsement. (RELATED: Did Nicki Minaj Endorse Trump?)
When asked about the hat at a press conference, Bosa stated, “I’m not gonna talk too much about it, but I think it’s an important time.” Bosa has not officially endorsed Trump for the 2024 presidential election.
