A post shared on Facebook claims the World Economic Forum (WEF) is planning to insert microchips into U.K. citizens, who are willing, in exchange for universal basic income (UBI).
Verdict: FALSE
No such program exists or has been announced either by the WEF, or the U.K government. A UBI program was proposed in 2023, but has no requirement for microchipping.
Fact Check:
Texas State Sen. Paul Bettencourt requested the state’s attorney general, Ken Paxton, declare a UBI program in Harris County “unconstitutional,” stating it violated the state’s “gift prohibition” constitutional clause, according to Business Insider. In South Dakota, a state Senate bill would ban local municipalities from creating similar programs, the outlet reported.
The Facebook post claims the WEF is rolling out a program in the U.K. that would allow citizens to have an unspecified microchip inserted into their body. In exchange, the post claims, those who volunteer could receive up to £2000 in compensation as part of a UBI program.
“W.E.F. ROLL OUT MICROCHIPS BEING INSTALLED INTO THE HANDS OF BRITISH CITIZENS IN EXCHANGE FOR Universal Basic Income PAYMENTS OF £2000 PCM,” the post claims in part. “UN agenda 2030 has many objectives and plans many have warned others about the dystopian plans but have dismissed as conspiracy theorists.”
The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting such a plan is being implemented by the WEF in any country, including the U.K. (RELATED: Did Sadiq Khan Sign a WEF Treaty That Banned Meat, Dairy and Private Car Ownership?)
A UBI program was being planned in the summer of 2023, where 30 people would be selected for a two-year pilot program that paid £1600 a month with no obligations, according to BBC. The program, which was expected to be funded by independent think tank Autonomy, would survey how the money would “impact…..the lives of participants,” CNBC reported.
Check Your Fact has reached out to Autonomy, the U.K. Department of Work and Pensions and the WEF for comment and will update this piece accordingly if a response is received.
