FACT CHECK: No, Image Doesn’t Show Assad In Moscow

An image shared on Facebook claims to show deposed Syrian leader Bashar Al-Assad in Moscow, Russia.

Verdict: False

The image is from 2023 and shows him in Aleppo, Syria, after an earthquake.

Fact Check:

Al-Assad, the longtime leader of the Syrian Arab Republic, was granted asylum in Moscow after his regime collapsed following a rebel offensive, according to Reuters. (RELATED: Did Pro-Palestine Protesters Burn A Christmas Tree In New York City?)

Social media users are claiming an image shows al-Assad and his wife in Moscow after he was deposed. One user wrote, “NEW: First picture of Assad and his wife in Moscow.”

This claim is false. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the image is from February 2023 and shows al-Assad visiting Aleppo. The image was taken from a video titled “Summary of Bashar al-Assad’s visit to those affected by the earthquake in Aleppo!”

“Watch | Summary of Bashar al-Assad’s visit to earthquake victims in Aleppo: ‘Politicizing the situation is a natural thing.. We do not have a human feeling,’” reads part of the video description.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria in February 2023, killing 53,537 people in Turkey and around 6,000 people in Syria, according to The Associated Press. This is not the first time an earthquake had struck Aleppo. An 1822 earthquake killed 10,000 people in Aleppo.
