Verdict: Misleading

Although tensions between Israel and Iran are escalating amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East, either side has yet to officially declare war.

Fact Check:

Iran launched a ballistic missile attack in Israel on Oct. 1 which lasted less than an hour and did not result in casualties, CBS News reported. The strike followed rising tensions between the two nations over the past several months, according to the outlet.

The X posts claims that Iran is formally at war with Israel. “JUST IN: 🇮🇷🇮🇱 Iran officially declares state of war against Israel,” the post’s caption reads.

The claim is misleading. No official declaration has been made to back this statement. Leaders for Israel have called the attack a “declaration of war,” but have not yet passed an official declaration, according to the Jerusalem Post. The last declaration of was issued by Israel was on Hamas in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, PBS reported. Iran has not yet made any remarks following the missile attack.

Iran’s subsequent ballistic attack was the most intense launched by the country since it struck Israel with over 300 projectiles back in April, suspecting that the Jewish nation had initiated a strike on Syria, CNN reported at the time. The tension between Iran and Israel has escalated over the past year, since Israel declared war on Hamas.

On X, users have shared footage of ballistic drones and missiles flying into Israeli territory. One post said that hundreds of these had been launched into the country within a 20-minute time frame, although the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) revealed about 180 missiles had been fired, per CBS News.
