FACT CHECK: Was US Ambassador To The UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield Hanged At Guantanamo Bay?

A post shared on Facebook claims U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Linda Thomas-Greenfield was recently hanged at Guantanamo Bay.

Verdict: False

The claim is false and originally stems from an August 8 article published on the satire site “Real Raw News.” In addition, a spokesperson for the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps denied the claim’s validity in an email to Check Your Fact.

Fact Check:

Thomas-Greenfield was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the UN in February 2021, according to her biography on the United States Mission to the United Nations website. Thomas-Greenfield also served with the U.S. Foreign Service for 35 years, the same biography indicates.

The Facebook post claims Thomas-Greenfield was recently hanged at Guantanamo Bay. According to the same post, Thomas-Greenfield was allegedly “arrested, arraigned, tried, and convicted on charges of plotting to allow UN ‘Peacekeepers’ to superintend voting locations in battleground states on Election Day 2024.”

The claim is false and originally stems from an August 8 article published on the satire site “Real Raw News.” A “Disclaimer” included on the site’s “About Us” page indicates its content is not meant to be taken literally. “Information on this website is for informational and educational and entertainment purposes. This website contains humor, parody, and satire. We have included this disclaimer for our protection, on the advice [of] legal counsel,” the disclaimer reads. Likewise, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. The claim is neither referenced on the U.S. Navy JAG Corps’ website nor its verified social media accounts. The UN also has not publicly commented on the claim.

In addition, Patricia Babb, a spokesperson for U.S. Navy JAG denied the claim’s validity in an email to Check Your Fact.

“This is not true,” Babb said of the claim.

Check Your Fact previously debunked a claim from Real Raw News purporting Thomas-Greenfield had allegedly been arrested for treason.
