A family-owned gallery in New York City is reeling after a thief stole a painting worth around $5,000 during a Monday smash-and-grab burglary, authorities said.
The crime occurred at roughly 2:15 a.m. when the thief smashed through the front door of Carlton Fine Arts in Midtown Manhattan, according to a report.

Police said the painting that was taken had been placed on an easel close to the front window, the report noted.
An alarm was activated during the incident, but the criminal managed to escape the scene and flee in a silver sedan that was driven by another individual.
The family-owned gallery first opened its doors in 1969, and it has promoted the works of Keith Haring, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Joan Miro, and Damien Hirst, according to the report.
Following the break-in, shards of glass and pieces of metal door handles were found all over the gallery’s floor.
“We are closed for inventory,” a sign in the front window read. “We will be open Tuesday at 10 a.m. Thank you.”

The smashed doorway was boarded, but it would not lock, so a worker stood guard until a glazier arrived.
No arrests relating to the crime have been reported.
