Fetterman thanks Biden for marijuana use pardons after he ‘personally asked’

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) thanked President Joe Biden on Friday for pardoning “bulls*** weed charges.”

The president signed a proclamation Friday to pardon all Americans who were arrested, prosecuted, or convicted on federal charges for marijuana use. This was Biden following through on his 2020 campaign promise. Fetterman, who has promoted the policy since before he was elected to the Senate in 2022, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to commemorate the proclamation.

“A few Christmases ago, as Lieutenant Governor, I pushed for legal weed and delivering pardons for bulls**t weed charges. As a Senate candidate, I personally asked POTUS to de-schedule cannabis and pardon those charges,” Feterman wrote. This Christmas, as a Senator, THANK YOU POTUS.”

Fetterman had a similar campaign promise to Biden’s ahead of his 2022 Senate win, suggesting marijuana should be legal nationwide.

“In the Senate, I’ll work to end the war on drugs by fighting to deschedule marijuana, expunge the records of those convicted of nonviolent marijuana offenses, and prevent the monopolization of this vibrant new industry,” his campaign website reads.

Last year, there were 227,108 arrests for marijuana violations, per the FBI Crime Data Explorer. A vast majority, 92%, of those arrested were for possession alone. This was over 60% fewer arrests than were made in 2020.

While most states allow for medical marijuana use, another 19 states and DC have legalized the drug for adult recreational use.
