First Homicide Reported Since Trump Assumed Federal Control Of DC

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has confirmed the first homicide since President Donald Trump federalized the department to end crime in Washington, D.C..

“On Tuesday, August 26, at approximately 12:24 a.m., Sixth District officers responded to the 300 block of Anacostia Road, Southeast, for a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital, and after all life saving efforts, was pronounced dead. ”

The murder marks the first to occur in 13 days since Trump began deploying National Guard troops and placed Washington, D.C. ‘s police department under direct federal control, citing a “public safety emergency” and pledging to take the nation’s capital “back” amid a wave of violent crime in recent months.

Trump signed an executive order Monday, titled, “Taking Steps To End Cashless Bail To Protect Americans,” which ends cashless bail for offenders in D.C.

The order instructs the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force to keep those arrested in federal custody whenever possible, seek federal charges, and push for pretrial detention.

The order states that if the city continues its cashless bail policy, the administration could respond by cutting federal funds or taking other actions, according to a fact sheet. (RELATED: How America’s Capital Became Soft-On-Crime Haven)

Three more states — Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia — have begun deploying their National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., as part of the Trump administration’s push to eliminate crime and homelessness in the nation’s capital.
