A Florida mother is alleging her transgender child was outed by the local high school district following a sports investigation into the high schooler‘s participation on the women’s volleyball team.
Monarch High School information technology department employee Jessica Norton, the student’s mother, argued that the inquiry into her child’s participation led to the student’s outing as transgender, according to a report.

“A lot of things were taken from my family this week — our privacy, sense of safety, and right to self-determination,” Norton said in a statement made via LGBT advocacy group Human Rights Campaign. “There is a long history in this country of outing people against their will — forced outing, particularly of a child, is a direct attempt to endanger the person being outed.”
“We kindly ask everyone to respect our family’s privacy, and to give our family the space we need to speak to our experience on our own terms and timeline.”
Multiple personnel, including the school principal and staffers at Monarch High School, have been reassigned by Broward County officials, according to Broward County Public Schools.
These reassignments occurred around the same time as the investigation of the transgender student-athlete on the women’s volleyball team, which is a violation of state law, the report noted.
It could not be confirmed if the reassignments were a direct result of the investigation, but a spokesperson for the district stated that they revolved around “allegations of improper student participation in sports.”

Norton thanked her greater community for supporting her child after the alleged incident.
“Watching our community’s resistance and display of love has been so joyous for our family — the light leading us through this darkness,” she said. “I want everyone to know that we see you, and we are so grateful for you.”
